Making the right decision
What you need to know before you make a decision
pilates teacher training before and now
Pilates teacher training has changed significantly in the recent few years. Back to early 2000 it involved a gruelling, long term training (between 14months for matwork only and 24months for matwork and equipment, in some training schools even longer) that would involve apprenticeship based practice of many hours in 100th, extensive theory and exam process. That kind of training takes over your life for almost 2+ years but you qualify as a very knowledgable teacher, with clear understanding of human condition. And once you enter that world you yearn for more information and keep learning. On the other hand, because Pilates is a relatively new method it was still unregulated so could've obtain a weekend training to become an instructor as long as you held some sort of certification like a personal trainer, for example. No, it is NOT possible to, in any way to comprehend the depth or learn anything about a method like Pilates in a weekend other than a few exercises to do by yourself at home!
Since that time new bread of teacher training evolved which are programmes created by certifying bodies like YMCA, which in turn allow you to apply for membership of Register of Exercise Professionals REPs (necessary if you want to work in gyms such as Virgin Active, Fitness First, etc). Currently, regulated certification is available for matwork teacher training only (at the studio we use the YMCA system). While equipment is still done as previously.
Both methods of training are still available on the market, not everyone sets off to work in gyms and even if you qualify without certifying body you can take on conversion course, at a later date, that will give you this same outcome.
The new system of training has changed how and what is taught during matwork teacher training, the courses have become cheaper, shorter (some time as little as few weeks or 3 months) and easier that unfortunately compromised the quality of what training as a Pilates teacher used to be. The long term format of teaching embeds the skill of teaching in such way that you remember it like riding a bike! While doing a short course, all in one go means by the time you come back home, you would have forgotten most of it already.

how do we teach at PTTC
For that reason, at the studio we combined some of the old with the new. We created combined 12 month courses that involve the essential matwork and further special population courses to give you a wholesome understanding of the method, human anatomy, physiology and pathology of certain conditions you will be faced with during your work. Additionally, we teach what does it meant to be in business of teaching Pilates, what to expect and what is expected of you. We have gone a step further and offer something no one else on the market offers which is foundation in Pilates (pre-training) course, that will help you decide if this is for you at all, no obligation to continue with the course if you change your mind.
If you decide to complete your Pilates education with equipment teacher training (further 12-18 months) you will be expected to qualify from both parts of matwork training first (essential and special populations). You may decide to do this in number of ways:
- as a comprehensive training: start with matwork, as you begin your second phase of training you will also start pre-training to equipment;
- as two part training: complete comprehensive matwork training, start working then comeback to do your equipment training when your are ready
- as a modular training: if time and lump sum of finance is an issue you can split it all into parts, including the two matwork phases and the equipments training, one piece at the time (this teacher training is carried our by the third party trainer as we only offers comprehensive training). Disadvantage of this type of training is that in the end it is much more expensive, it can be challenging to coordinate the timing of new courses and you will miss out on the peer group aspect of it, which is very important during education.

Regardless of what your motivation to join teacher training is, it is a commitment that requires serious thought. We have a great team of people that will support you in your journey and offer you their experience and time but in the end of the day, you will need to do the work. And if you do, you will come out on the other side changed, with a new view on a human body, movement and your life.
